How much TFSA contribution room do you have?

The TFSA limit for 2026 is $7,000. If you were 18 or older in 2009, have lived in Canada since, and have never contributed, your total room is $109,000. Withdrawals come back as new room on January 1 of the following year, not when you take the money out. The table under the calculator gives your total by birth year.

How TFSA contribution room works

  • Room starts accumulating the year you turn 18 (and are a Canadian resident with a SIN), whether or not you have opened a TFSA. Every year's limit is added on January 1.
  • The 2026 annual limit is $7,000. Someone who was 18 or older in 2009 and has never contributed has $109,000 of cumulative room as of 2026.
  • Withdrawals are added back to your room, but only on January 1 of the following year. Taking money out and putting it back in the same year counts as a second contribution.
  • Excess contributions are taxed at 1% per month on the highest excess amount for every month it stays in the account. CRA does not round to the day.
  • Years spent as a non-resident of Canada do not add room, and contributions made while non-resident are taxed at 1% per month too.
  • CRA's own figure in My Account is only as current as the last annual report from your bank, so early in the year it can lag your real activity by a full year of contributions.

TFSA room if you've never contributed

TFSA room starts building in the year you turn 18, as long as you're a Canadian resident with a social insurance number, whether or not you've opened an account. If you've never put money in, your room for 2026 is the sum of every annual limit from that year on:

Born in…Turned 18 in…That year's limitTotal TFSA room in 2026
1991 or earlier2009 or earlier$5,000$109,000
19922010$5,000$104,000
19932011$5,000$99,000
19942012$5,000$94,000
19952013$5,500$89,000
19962014$5,500$83,500
19972015$10,000$78,000
19982016$5,500$68,000
19992017$5,500$62,500
20002018$5,500$57,000
20012019$6,000$51,500
20022020$6,000$45,500
20032021$6,000$39,500
20042022$6,000$33,500
20052023$6,500$27,500
20062024$7,000$21,000
20072025$7,000$14,000
20082026$7,000$7,000

Two things lower these numbers. Years you lived outside Canada add no room. And in provinces where the age of majority is 19, you can't open a TFSA until you turn 19, though the room from the year you turned 18 still counts. If either applies to you, use the calculator above and enter your own years.

Withdrawals, re-contributions, and the 1% penalty: a worked example

The most common way people over-contribute is by putting money back too soon. Here's how it happens.

  • In March 2026, Priya has used all her TFSA room.
  • In June 2026, she withdraws $5,000 for a car repair.
  • In September 2026, she gets a bonus and puts the $5,000 back.

The June withdrawal doesn't restore her room until January 1, 2027. So the September deposit is a new contribution she has no room for. It's an excess of $5,000.

CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess in each month it stays in the account. September, October, November and December make four months: 4 × $50 = $200, plus the TFSA return she'd have to file. On January 1, 2027, the $5,000 withdrawal comes back as room, the excess disappears, and the 1% stops.

Waiting until January would have cost her nothing. So would withdrawing the excess as soon as she noticed: the 1% stops in the month it leaves, though the months already counted are still owed. The calculator above applies the same rule: a withdrawal only shows up as room from the next January 1.

TFSA questions, answered

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?

The TFSA annual limit for 2026 is $7,000. It is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, so it stays flat for a few years and then steps up.

What was the TFSA limit in each year since 2009?

2009 to 2012: $5,000; 2013 to 2014: $5,500; 2015: $10,000; 2016 to 2018: $5,500; 2019 to 2022: $6,000; 2023: $6,500; 2024 to 2026: $7,000. Added together, that is $109,000 for someone who was 18 or older in 2009 and has lived in Canada since. Unused room from any of these years carries forward.

How much total TFSA room do I have if I have never contributed?

If you turned 18 in or before 2009 and have been a Canadian resident the whole time, your cumulative room as of 2026 is $109,000. If you turned 18 later, add up the annual limits from that year onward — the calculator does this for you from your birth year.

Do TFSA withdrawals give me my room back?

Yes, but not immediately. Any amount you withdraw is added back to your contribution room on January 1 of the next calendar year. Re-contributing in the same year uses new room, and if you have none left it is an over-contribution.

What is the penalty for over-contributing to a TFSA?

CRA charges a tax of 1% per month on the highest excess amount in the account for each month the excess remains. Withdrawing the excess stops the clock, but the months already accrued are still owed.

Can I re-contribute a TFSA withdrawal in the same year?

Only if you already have unused room. A withdrawal comes back as room on January 1 of the next year, so putting the money back sooner uses whatever room you have left, and anything beyond that is an over-contribution taxed at 1% per month.

Do transfers between TFSAs count as withdrawals?

Not if the institutions move the money directly from one TFSA to another. Withdrawing the cash yourself and depositing it at the new institution is a withdrawal plus a contribution, and the contribution needs room.

Why is the room CRA shows me different from this calculator?

Financial institutions report TFSA activity to CRA once a year, so the figure in My Account can be up to a year stale. This calculator uses what you enter today. If the two disagree, reconcile against your own contribution and withdrawal records.
