How to export your transactions from Questrade
- Log in to your Questrade account on the web.
- Open Reports in the top navigation.
- Select Go to transaction history.
- Pick a date range. The preset ranges are 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and YTD; choose Custom for anything longer.
- Export the transactions to an Excel spreadsheet.
Questrade says this page covers trades, dividends, DRIPs, interest, corporate actions, transfers, deposits and withdrawals. That's the history Looniee needs to work out cost base, income and cash.
If your history is long, export it in pieces (one file per year, for example). Overlapping ranges are fine: Looniee marks rows it has already imported as Already in and skips them.
What the file gives you, and what it doesn't
| In the export | Not in the export |
|---|---|
| Every trade, with quantity, price, commission and net amount | A ready-made “holdings as of today” snapshot |
| Dividends, DRIPs and interest | Your contribution room. That depends on every account you've held anywhere, not just Questrade |
| Deposits, withdrawals and transfers, with the account number | Anything from before the date range you chose |
If you only want today's positions without the history, you can add them by hand with Add holding: symbol, shares and account for each one.
How to import it into Looniee
- Create a free account, open your dashboard and choose Import, then A file from your broker.
- Drop in the Excel or CSV file. Looniee recognises Questrade's activity columns (Transaction Date, Action, Gross Amount, Commission, Net Amount, Account #) and maps them for you. If Questrade has changed a column name, you match it once on the mapping screen.
- Each Questrade account number becomes one Looniee account. Confirm the type (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP, margin/non-registered) for each.
- Review every row by account. Duplicates are marked Already in and skipped.
- Select Import. To reverse it later: Settings → Import history → Undo import.
Looniee reads the file, saves the rows you confirmed, and discards the file.
Your contribution room, too. Room is worked out in the Planner, across every institution you've used. When the file has TFSA, RRSP, FHSA or RESP deposits and withdrawals, the last import screen lists them and offers to add them to the Planner. Transfers between institutions and non-CAD amounts are left for you to check, and undoing the import removes what it added.
US-dollar trades
Questrade accounts often hold both CAD and USD. Looniee keeps each trade and each cash balance in its own currency and converts to Canadian dollars at the exchange rate on the transaction's own date, not today's. Last year's cost base doesn't drift every time the loonie moves. Holding US dividend payers? See what US withholding tax costs in each account.
Free plan limits
Free covers 3 accounts, 10 holdings and 500 transactions, with every tracking feature working. A long Questrade history can pass 500 transactions; if a file goes over a cap, Looniee imports what fits and tells you what was left out. Looniee Plus (CA$9 a month, or CA$72 a year) removes the caps.
Why a file and not a connection
Looniee never connects to Questrade. You bring a file when you want to update, and nothing stays linked: no aggregator holds your credentials, and no sync breaks when Questrade changes its login. The trade-off is that updates are manual. If you want automatic sync, a connected aggregator suits you better.
