Track your Wealthsimple portfolio alongside everything else

Wealthsimple lets you download two CSV files from its website: a holdings report (what you own on a given date) and a custom activity statement (your trades, deposits and withdrawals over a period). Neither is available in the mobile app. Import either one into Looniee and your Wealthsimple accounts sit next to your Questrade, bank and workplace accounts, with live prices and dividends in one place. Looniee never asks for your Wealthsimple password.

Which Wealthsimple file to download

You want to…DownloadWhat's in it
Get started in five minutesHoldings report (CSV)Each position as of the date you pick: account, security, quantity, plus price and value figures
Track cost base, dividends and contributions over timeCustom activity statement (CSV)Buys, sells, deposits, withdrawals and option events over the period you choose
Check realized gains for your own recordsRealized gain/loss report (CSV)Per-security gains and losses, in CAD and USD. Wealthsimple notes it isn't an official tax document

The holdings report is the quickest start. The activity statement is what you need if you want Looniee to know when you bought, which is what makes the performance chart and cost base meaningful.

How to download them from Wealthsimple

These statements are only available in a browser, not in the Wealthsimple app.

Holdings report

  1. Log in to Wealthsimple in your browser.
  2. Open the Profile menu in the bottom-left corner and choose Documents.
  3. Select Generate document, then Holdings report (CSV).
  4. Pick the As of date (today, for a current snapshot) and select Next.
  5. Choose your accounts and select Download CSV.

Custom activity statement

  1. From Profile → Documents, select Generate document.
  2. Choose Custom activity statement.
  3. Pick the time period. To capture your whole history, start from the month you opened your first account.
  4. Select Next, choose your accounts, and download the CSV (the PDF works for reading, but import needs the CSV).

What the activity statement leaves out

Wealthsimple's own help page lists three gaps, and they're worth knowing before you import:

  • No chequing activity, and no crypto staking or swaps.
  • No running cash balance. The statement shows transactions, not what was sitting in cash on any day. After importing, check each account's cash in Looniee against Wealthsimple's current balance and correct it with Edit cash if they differ.
  • Contribution confirmations aren't a substitute for room. Wealthsimple's contribution statement shows contributions for a tax year, but your room depends on every account you've ever held at every institution. CRA My Account, or the free TFSA contribution room calculator, is where that comes together.

How to import the file into Looniee

  1. Create a free account, open your dashboard and choose Import, then A file from your broker.
  2. Drop in the CSV. Looniee detects whether it's a holdings file or an activity file and matches the columns. If Wealthsimple has renamed a column and Looniee can't place it, you match it once on the mapping screen.
  3. Confirm which Looniee account each Wealthsimple account goes into (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, non-registered…). Account types are suggested from the file and you can change them.
  4. Review every row, grouped by account. Rows already in Looniee are marked Already in and skipped, so importing an overlapping date range never double-counts.
  5. Select Import. If something looks wrong afterwards, Settings → Import history → Undo import removes that batch and nothing else.

Your file is read, turned into rows, and then discarded. Looniee doesn't keep the CSV.

Your contribution room, too. Room is worked out in the Planner, across every institution you've used, not just Wealthsimple. When the file has TFSA, RRSP, FHSA or RESP deposits and withdrawals, the last import screen lists them and offers to add them to the Planner. Transfers between institutions and non-CAD amounts are left for you to check, and undoing the import removes what it added.

Free plan limits that apply to imports

The free plan covers 3 accounts, 10 holdings and 500 transactions, with every tracking feature working. A TFSA and an RRSP holding a handful of ETFs fit with room to spare. If a file goes over a cap, Looniee imports what fits and tells you what didn't. It never silently drops rows. Looniee Plus (CA$9 a month, or CA$72 a year) removes the caps.

Why import instead of connecting your account

Connected trackers hold a standing login to your brokerage through an aggregator. Looniee takes the opposite trade-off: you download a file when you want to update, and nothing stays connected. It's more manual. In return, no third party holds your Wealthsimple credentials, and no connection breaks when Wealthsimple changes its login. If you'd rather have automatic sync, a connected aggregator is the better fit.
