What Wealthsimple's app already does
More than people assume. The app shows performance and dividends earned on your accounts, and a Net worth tab where you can link accounts at other institutions or add them by hand. Partners can choose which balances to share, and the first two members of a household can see each other's accounts. You can download your activity as a CSV from the Activities tab, and generate a holdings report or realized gains report as a CSV from the browser.
If that covers what you look at, adding another app mostly adds work.
The gap: contribution room
Wealthsimple's help centre is direct about this: "We don't track your contribution room. We recommend checking your Canada Revenue Agency My Account." Its TFSA and FHSA trackers show only what you've contributed at Wealthsimple during the current calendar year.
That's fine if Wealthsimple is your only TFSA and you never withdraw. It stops being fine if you also have a TFSA at a bank, or took money out this year and want to put it back. Withdrawals only come back as room on January 1 of the next year, and the CRA charges 1% a month on an over-contribution. Wealthsimple can't see the other account, and CRA My Account only updates once a year in the spring.
01Wealthsimple’s own app
Best for everything already at Wealthsimple
If all your accounts are at Wealthsimple, start and probably finish here. It's free, it updates itself, it has apps on every platform, and it has a household view for you and a partner. No file to import, ever.
Two limits matter. It doesn't track contribution room, and it only knows about contributions made at Wealthsimple. If either of those is a problem, keep reading.
Good
- Free and automatic for Wealthsimple accounts
- Net worth that can include linked or manual outside accounts
- Partner view built in
Not so good
- Doesn't track contribution room
- Only counts contributions made at Wealthsimple
- Some reports only exist in the browser, not the app
02LoonieeOurs
Best for Wealthsimple plus other accounts, with room
This is ours. Export a holdings report or activity statement from Wealthsimple as a CSV and Looniee reads it with a dedicated parser; files from Questrade, TD, RBC and CIBC are recognised too, and any other broker's file is matched column by column. After the import, Looniee offers to add the file's TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RESP deposits and withdrawals to your room tracking.
The reason to bother is room. Looniee applies the rules itself: TFSA withdrawals come back on January 1, the RRSP keeps its $2,000 buffer, the FHSA carries forward at most $8,000. With a TFSA at Wealthsimple and another at a bank, it adds them up per person, which Wealthsimple can't.
The cost is effort: nothing syncs, so a new trade at Wealthsimple shows up after your next import or when you type it. It's free for 3 accounts, 10 holdings, 500 transactions.
Good
- Dedicated Wealthsimple CSV parser
- Room per person across every institution you log
- No bank or broker login
Not so good
- No sync; you re-import or type new trades
- Web only, English only
- Data may be stored outside Canada, including in the US
03Greenline
Best for a free room tracker with an iPhone app
Greenline works on the same idea as Looniee, no bank login, and names Wealthsimple among the brokers it has verified parsers for. It reads PDFs and screenshots as well as spreadsheets, has an iOS app, tracks TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RDSP room from a starting figure you confirm, and is free while in beta.
It's newer: paid pricing hasn't been announced, partner sharing isn't available yet, and full data export is “on the way”.
Good
- Free during beta, unlimited holdings
- Reads PDFs and screenshots
- iOS app
Not so good
- Future pricing unknown
- No partner sharing yet
- Data export not shipped yet
04Snowball Analytics
Best for Wealthsimple dividend investors
If you buy dividend stocks at Wealthsimple and want a calendar of upcoming payments, yield on cost and a dividend rating, Snowball is built for it. It has a help article on importing from Wealthsimple, and broker linking on its paid plans.
Prices are in US dollars, and it doesn't document room tracking.
Good
- Dividend calendar and yield on cost
- A Wealthsimple import guide
- Apps on iOS and Android
Not so good
- Priced in USD
- No documented room tracking
- Broker linking is paid only
05Sharesight
Best for capital gains reports with a connected Wealthsimple
If you have a Wealthsimple non-registered account and want capital gains figured with the ACB method at tax time, Sharesight lists Wealthsimple among its 14 Canadian brokers. Its tax reports start on the paid plans.
It treats TFSA and RRSP as tax settings on a portfolio, not as room to track.
Good
- Wealthsimple among 14 supported Canadian brokers
- Mature ACB capital gains report
- Prices in CAD
Not so good
- No documented room tracking
- Tax reports aren't on the free plan
- Free plan counts sold holdings toward its 10
06CRA My Account
Best for checking your room once a year
Whatever else you use, this is the official figure, and it's where Wealthsimple itself sends you. It's also the only place your RRSP deduction limit comes from.
Its limit is timing. Institutions report a year's transactions at the end of February of the next year, and the CRA updates TFSA information once a year in the spring.
Good
- The official number
- Free
- Has your RRSP deduction limit
Not so good
- Updated once a year
- Doesn't know this year's contributions
Our pick
If every account you have is at Wealthsimple, use Wealthsimple's app and check CRA My Account each spring. You don't need us, or anyone else.
If you also have a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA somewhere else, or you share finances with a partner who banks elsewhere, you need something that counts room across all of them. That's what Looniee is for: export your Wealthsimple CSV once and keep logging from there. If you'd rather have a phone app and don't need household features, Greenline is free while it's in beta.
What we'd do today
- Open Wealthsimple's TFSA contribution tracker and note what you've put in this year. Remember it only counts Wealthsimple.
- Sign in to CRA My Account and note your TFSA room and the date it's as of. Add up contributions you've made anywhere since that date.
- If it's tight, check it with the free TFSA contribution room calculator before your next deposit.
- If you'll keep tracking across institutions, export a Wealthsimple CSV (here's how) and try it in a tracker. The Looniee demo needs no account.
Questions
- Does Wealthsimple track my TFSA contribution room?
- No. Its help centre says "We don't track your contribution room" and recommends CRA My Account. The app shows only this calendar year's contributions to Wealthsimple TFSAs.
- Can Wealthsimple show accounts at other banks?
- Yes, in its Net worth tab: you can link external accounts to pull balances automatically, or add them by hand. Linked balances aren't the same as tracking room across those accounts, though.
- How do I get my data out of Wealthsimple?
- Activity downloads as a CSV from the Activities tab (Download activities, then choose the period and accounts). A holdings report and a realized gain/loss report are available as CSVs under Profile → Documents in a browser. Looniee's Wealthsimple import guide shows which file to use.
- Does any tracker connect to Wealthsimple automatically?
- Some do, through aggregators: Snowball Analytics links brokers on its paid plans, and Sharesight lists Wealthsimple among its supported brokers. Looniee and Greenline don't connect to anything; you import a file instead.
