Looniee Plus

Looniee Plus: tax, retirement and household tools for Canadian investors

Looniee Plus is the paid plan of Looniee, a portfolio and contribution-room tracker for Canadians. It costs CA$9 a month or CA$72 a year, starts with a 3-day free trial, and adds six tools to the free tracker: a tax toolkit, an account optimizer, retirement projections, household tracking for up to 6 people, portfolio analytics and AI Insights. It also lifts the free plan's record caps. Everything works from your own balances, imported from a broker file or typed in. There is no bank connection.

What each Plus tool does

Tax toolkit

Keeps average-cost ACB for each security across your non-registered accounts, values every USD trade at that day's exchange rate, totals capital gains by tax year, flags superficial losses (including a buy-back inside a TFSA or RRSP, where the loss is gone for good), checks the T5, T3 and T5008 amounts you enter against your records, splits RRSP receipts between the first 60 days and the rest of the year, and tracks the cost of foreign property against the T1135 thresholds.

Limit: Estimates to check against your slips, not tax advice. ACB is pooled across every non-registered account in the login, so two spouses' accounts share one pool; CRA tracks ACB per person.

How the superficial loss rule works

Account optimizer

Ranks which of your TFSA, RRSP and FHSA to fund first for your income and province, forecasts room, plans RESP contributions to collect the most Canada Education Savings Grant, suggests which kinds of holdings suit which account, and shows the tax and room cost of a withdrawal from each account type.

Limit: General rules applied to your numbers, not personalised advice.

FHSA vs RRSP for a first home

Retirement and goals

Projects your real balances to retirement and through a RRIF drawdown with CPP, OAS (including the OAS clawback) and an income-tax estimate, runs a Monte Carlo simulation for a success rate with 10th, 50th and 90th percentile paths, finds the earliest age the plan holds up, and projects an FHSA against a down-payment target.

Limit: Scenarios from the return and inflation assumptions you set, not forecasts.

Household

Looniee Plus tracks up to 6 people inside one Looniee login: each account is labelled with its owner, and you can view the household together or one person at a time, with each person's contribution room kept separately.

Limit: There are no invitations, shared logins or per-person permissions: whoever holds the login sees every account. The free plan tracks one person.

How it works for couples

Portfolio analytics

Looks through ETFs to the sectors, countries and largest companies underneath, shows how much of your money sits in one company across funds and direct holdings, measures drift from a target mix (flagged at 5 percentage points), splits returns into market and currency effects, and compares your return with VEQT, VGRO, VBAL, a 60/40 mix or the S&P 500 in Canadian dollars.

Limit: Company-level look-through uses each fund's top holdings as Yahoo Finance publishes them (about ten), so it is a floor; sector and asset-class splits cover the whole fund.

AI Insights

A 0 to 100 portfolio health score, a short list of what to act on next, a plain-English recap of your month, and Ask Looniee, which answers questions from your actual holdings.

Limit: Ask Looniee has a monthly AI allowance; one-time AI Boost packs add more. Answers are information, not financial advice.

When Plus pays for itself

Plus costs CA$108 a year paid monthly, or CA$72 paid yearly. It earns that back when a single decision it informs is worth more than that. Three common ones:

  • An RESP grant year left behind. The Canada Education Savings Grant adds 20% on the first CA$2,500 you put in each year, up to CA$500 per child. The optimizer plans the contributions that collect it.
  • A loss sale undone by a buy-back. Buy the same security within 30 days before or after the sale, in any of your accounts or your spouse's, and the loss is denied; if the buy-back is in a TFSA or RRSP, it is gone for good. The tax toolkit flags it before tax time.
  • Money in the wrong account first. Which of the TFSA, RRSP and FHSA to fill depends on your income, province and plans. The optimizer ranks them from your numbers.

If none of that applies yet, stay on Free: it tracks holdings, net worth and contribution room for one person, and the free calculators cover the room rules without an account.

Who Looniee suits, and who it doesn't

A good fit

  • A Canadian who wants TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RESP contribution room tracked next to their holdings, without giving a bank or brokerage login to anyone (free plan).
  • A couple or family who want each person's accounts and contribution room kept separately in one place (Plus, up to 6 people).
  • Someone moving off Blossom, Wealthica or a spreadsheet who can export a broker file or take screenshots (free plan).
  • A non-registered investor who needs ACB and capital gains with USD trades valued at each day's exchange rate, and a superficial-loss check before selling (Plus).
  • Someone choosing between a TFSA, RRSP and FHSA, or planning RESP grants, who wants the answer worked out from their own balances (Plus).

Not a fit

  • People who want accounts to update by themselves: Looniee has no bank or brokerage sync, so new trades are imported or typed. Wealthica and Kubera sync.
  • Budgeting or spending tracking: Looniee tracks investments and net worth, not spending categories.
  • Investors outside Canada: the account types, room rules and tax tools are Canadian.
  • A dedicated dividend app or a full financial-planning suite: Snowball and ProjectionLab go deeper there.
  • Sharing access with a partner or adviser on separate logins: whoever holds the one login sees every account.

Questions

How much is Looniee Plus?

CA$9 a month billed monthly, or CA$72 a year billed yearly (works out to CA$6 a month).

Is there a free trial?

First-time subscribers get a 3-day free trial. A card is required to start it, a reminder email gives the first charge date, and the subscription starts automatically unless you cancel before the trial ends. One trial per person, enforced by email and card fingerprint.

Can I cancel, and what happens to my data?

Cancel any time in one step from Settings. Plus stays on until the end of the paid period, then the account returns to the free plan without deleting anything.

Does Looniee Plus connect to my bank or brokerage?

Looniee does not connect to banks or brokerages and never asks for their passwords. Balances and trades arrive by import or by typing them. Account activity is not synced. After the first import you add new trades yourself or import a newer file. Market prices still update automatically.

Is Looniee Plus tax or financial advice?

No. Looniee is informational software. Its tax figures are estimates to check against your slips, and its projections are scenarios from assumptions you set.

3-day free trial, no charge today. Then CA$9 a month unless you cancel before the trial ends.
