What "no bank login" actually protects
Connected trackers reach your accounts through an aggregator that holds a standing, usually read-only, link to your institution. That's convenient and mostly safe, but it means a third party can log in on your behalf every day, and those connections break often enough that Kubera's own help centre says "100% connectivity is impossible."
A file-based tracker removes that link. You download a CSV, PDF or screenshot from your broker and give it to the tracker. Nobody holds a key to your accounts, and nothing can log in tomorrow. The trade-off is that nothing updates itself: a new trade appears when you import the next file or type it.
The question people forget: where does the data go?
Not connecting your accounts doesn't mean your holdings stay on your machine. A web tracker stores what you import on its servers. Ask three things: which country, whether it's encrypted, and whether you can export everything and delete your account. Several products below don't document the first one, and we've said so.
01LoonieeOurs
Best for room and household tracking without connecting anything
This is ours, and not connecting is the whole design. Looniee never asks for a bank or broker password. You import the CSV or Excel file your broker lets you download (TD, RBC, CIBC, Questrade and Wealthsimple are read by dedicated parsers; others are matched column by column), upload a screenshot, or type. An imported file is read into rows and discarded. If a file's columns can't be matched automatically, an optional AI step sees only the header row and up to five sample rows, with every digit masked.
In return you get TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RESP room worked out per person, and you can export everything or delete your account at any time. It's free for 3 accounts, 10 holdings, 500 transactions.
The weakness: Looniee doesn't offer Canadian data residency. Our privacy policy names the providers and says they may store data in the US. If that's a deal-breaker, WealthWise below is the better choice.
Good
- Never asks for a bank or broker login
- Imported files aren't kept
- Export everything, delete any time
Not so good
- Data may be stored outside Canada, including the US
- No sync; you import or type new trades
- Web only, English only
02Greenline
Best for a free no-login tracker with an iPhone app
Greenline is built on the same principle: "Greenline doesn't connect to your bank." It reads PDF statements, spreadsheets and screenshots, with verified parsers for eight named Canadian brokers and an AI parser for the rest. It tracks TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RDSP room from a starting figure you confirm, has an iOS app, and is free during its beta.
Where its data is stored wasn't on the pages we reviewed, and full data export is “on the way” rather than shipped. Ask both before you rely on it.
Good
- No bank connection, by design
- Reads PDFs and screenshots
- Free during beta; iOS app
Not so good
- Data location not documented
- Data export not shipped yet
- Future pricing unknown
03WealthWise
Best for data stored in Canada
WealthWise beats us on the question this guide is about. It hosts its data in Canada, and on its Free and Essential plans you bring data in by CSV or Excel import, with no connection. It's bilingual, tracks RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RRIF and RESP accounts separately, and has FIRE projections.
Two things to know. Broker sync through SnapTrade exists on Premium, so this pick means staying on a plan without it, or simply not turning it on. And the product is labelled beta, with list prices and a separate beta offer.
Good
- Data hosted in Canada
- File import without any connection on its cheaper plans
- English and French
Not so good
- Labelled beta
- Room tracking isn't documented
- Sync on Premium means the no-login choice is yours to keep
04AdjustedCostBase.ca
Best for capital gains, typed in by hand
If you only need your adjusted cost base and capital gains, AdjustedCostBase.ca's free plan works entirely from what you type: no file upload, no connection. It's been running since 2010 and tracks superficial losses.
It isn't a portfolio tracker, and brokerage connection is a Premium option you'd simply leave off.
Good
- Free plan is typing only
- Superficial-loss tracking
- Excel and CSV export
Not so good
- Capital gains only, no net worth
- Typing every trade takes time
- Data location not documented
05A spreadsheet
Best for maximum privacy
An Excel file on your own computer is the most private tracker there is: no account, no server, no company. Paste in your broker's export and it's yours alone.
You lose live prices unless you add them, and every rule (TFSA room, ACB, withholding) is a formula you have to write and trust.
Good
- Nothing leaves your machine unless you choose
- Free
Not so good
- All the rules are yours to build
- No live prices without extra work
Our pick
If you want a real tracker without giving anyone your bank login, Looniee and Greenline are the two built for it. Pick Looniee if contribution room across a household is what you're tracking; pick Greenline if you want an iPhone app and a free beta.
If Canadian data residency matters more to you than room tracking, choose WealthWise and keep sync switched off. That's a real advantage over us, and we'd rather you knew.
What we'd do today
- Download one CSV from your broker: an activity or holdings export. Look at what's actually in it before you give it to anyone.
- For any tracker you're considering, find three answers in its privacy policy: which country stores the data, whether you can export it, and how deletion works.
- Try the tracker with sample data first. The Looniee demo needs no account.
- If you'd rather nothing left your computer, start with a spreadsheet and the free contribution room calculators, which don't need an account either.
Questions
- Is it safe to connect my bank to a portfolio tracker?
- Most connected trackers use read-only access through an aggregator, and many people use them without trouble. The trade-off is that a third party holds a standing link to your accounts, and connections can break. If you'd rather avoid that, use a file-based tracker.
- Which Canadian portfolio trackers don't need a bank login?
- Looniee and Greenline never connect to a bank or broker. WealthWise works from file imports on its plans without sync. AdjustedCostBase.ca's free plan is typing only. A spreadsheet needs nothing.
- Does Looniee store my data in Canada?
- No. Looniee's database, hosting and sign-in providers may store or process data outside Canada, including in the United States. The privacy policy lists them. WealthWise says it hosts data in Canada.
- If I don't connect my accounts, how do prices stay current?
- Market prices come from a quote feed, not your broker, so file-based trackers still show current values. What doesn't update is your holdings: a new trade appears after your next import or when you type it.
