What "free" actually means on each of these
Free plans come in three kinds, and the difference matters more than the feature list.
- Free for now. Greenline is free while it's in beta. Its pricing page promises paid plans "at launch, with monthly and annual options" and better rates for early members. Great today; unknown later.
- Free forever, with a cap. Looniee, Sharesight, Snowball Analytics and WealthWise all have permanent free plans that limit holdings, portfolios or accounts. Nothing expires, but you'll hit the cap as your portfolio grows.
- Free because you're already a customer. Wealthsimple's app costs nothing if your money is at Wealthsimple. Of the trackers here, it's the one that's both free and automatic, but it sees one broker unless you link or type in the rest.
The two limits that catch people
Sold holdings counting toward the cap. Sharesight's free plan allows 10 holdings "incl. closed", so a stock you sold last year still uses a slot. If you trade at all, you'll fill it faster than you expect.
No sync on free plans. Snowball's free plan has no broker linking, and WealthWise's pricing page doesn't list a broker connection on any plan. On a free plan you'll be importing files or typing trades on almost every tracker here, so pick one whose import works with your broker.
Holdings allowed on each free plan
Most permanent free plans stop at 10 to 15 holdings. Greenline has no cap while it's in beta; Sharesight counts holdings you've sold.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| WealthWise | 15 (assets, 1 portfolio) |
| Stock Events | 15 (stocks) |
| Looniee | 10 (across 3 accounts) |
| Snowball Analytics | 10 (1 portfolio) |
| Sharesight | 10 (sold holdings count) |
01Greenline
Best for the most room on a free plan, today
Right now Greenline's free plan is the most generous here by a distance: unlimited holdings, room tracking for TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RDSP, ACB, a dividend timeline, PDF and screenshot import, and an iOS app. If you want the most tracker for zero dollars this year, start here.
The catch is in the word beta. Paid plans haven't been announced, so you can't know what it will cost once you've put a year of data into it. Its FAQ also says full CSV export is "on the way", which matters if you might want to leave.
Good
- Unlimited holdings while in beta
- Room tracking, ACB and dividends on the free plan
- iOS app; reads PDF statements
Not so good
- Future price unknown
- Full data export not shipped yet
- Android app not out yet
02LoonieeOurs
Best for a permanent free plan that tracks registered-account room
This is ours. Looniee's free plan doesn't expire and every tracking feature works on it: live prices, TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RESP room, broker file imports, AI screenshot import, dividends with withholding tax by account type, export and the calculators. The caps are on volume, not on features.
The 10-holding cap is the limit you'll feel first. A three-ETF portfolio across a TFSA, an RRSP and a non-registered account fits comfortably; a portfolio of 30 individual stocks doesn't. Hitting a cap never deletes or hides anything, it only blocks the next new record. Households (more than one person) are a Plus feature.
Good
- Free forever; caps on volume, not features
- Room tracking per account type
- Export everything any time
Not so good
- 10 holdings and 3 accounts on the free plan
- No sync; you import or type new trades
- Web only and English only
03Wealthsimple’s own app
Best for anyone whose accounts are all at Wealthsimple
If Wealthsimple holds everything, you already have a free tracker that updates itself: holdings, performance, dividends earned, this year's contributions, and a net worth tab where you can link other institutions or add accounts by hand. Partners can choose to share balances with each other.
Where it stops: it doesn't track contribution room (its help centre sends you to CRA My Account), and its contribution tracker only counts deposits made at Wealthsimple. Add a second broker and you lose the full picture of your room.
Good
- Free and automatic
- Unlimited holdings
- Partner household view
Not so good
- No contribution-room tracking
- Only sees contributions made at Wealthsimple
04WealthWise
Best for a Canadian tracker with data hosted in Canada
WealthWise's free plan covers one portfolio, and the product is bilingual with its database hosted in Canada. If where your data lives matters to you, that's a real advantage over Looniee, whose providers may store data in the US.
Its pricing page says an account limit applies to assets on free, without giving the number. It's labelled beta, and room tracking isn't documented on its pages.
Good
- Free plan, no card
- English and French
- Database hosted in Canada
Not so good
- One portfolio only on free
- Free-plan asset limit not stated
- Room tracking not documented
05Sharesight
Best for trying a mature tracker before paying for its tax reports
Sharesight's free plan is a genuine way to try one of the most complete trackers around, with automatic dividends and corporate actions. It's priced in CAD when you do upgrade.
As a long-term free home it's tight: one portfolio means one account, sold holdings use up your 10 slots, and the capital gains report needs a paid plan.
Good
- Automatic dividends, DRIPs and splits
- Strong paid tax reports when you need them
- CAD pricing
Not so good
- Sold holdings count toward the 10
- One portfolio, so one registered account
- No tax reports on free
06Snowball Analytics
Best for a free dividend tracker with good mobile apps
Snowball is built around dividends: a calendar, yield on cost and dividend ratings, with well-rated iOS and Android apps. Its pricing page doesn't spell out which of those stay on the free plan, so try them during the 14-day trial, which needs no card and drops you to the free plan afterwards rather than charging you.
Ten holdings in one portfolio, no broker linking, and paid plans in US dollars.
Good
- Built around dividends: calendar, yield on cost
- iOS and Android apps
- Trial needs no card
Not so good
- 10 holdings, one portfolio
- No broker linking on free
- Paid plans in USD
07A spreadsheet
Best for no caps and no company in the middle
No limits, no beta and no future price. Google Sheets can even pull delayed prices with a formula.
You build everything yourself, including the rules. Contribution room is where homemade trackers go wrong most often, because a TFSA withdrawal only comes back as room on January 1 of the next year, and a running total doesn't know that.
Good
- Free, unlimited and private
- Fully under your control
Not so good
- You maintain every formula
- Room rules are easy to get wrong
Our pick
If you want the most features for free right now and you're comfortable with an unknown future price, try Greenline while its beta lasts. If all your accounts are at Wealthsimple, its own app is free, automatic and enough for most people.
If you want a free plan that will still be free in five years and you hold registered accounts at more than one place, that's what Looniee's free plan is for, as long as you fit in 10 holdings. Check your room with the free contribution room calculators either way; they need no account.
What we'd do today
- Count your holdings across every account, including anything you sold this year. That number decides which free plans fit.
- Check that your broker's export works with the tracker before you commit. Looniee reads Wealthsimple and Questrade files directly: see how to export from Wealthsimple.
- Read the first paid tier's price now, not when you hit the cap. Our pricing page shows Looniee's.
- Try a tracker with sample data before you enter your own. Looniee's live demo needs no account.
Questions
- Is there a completely free portfolio tracker in Canada?
- Yes, with conditions. Greenline is free with unlimited holdings while it's in beta. Wealthsimple's app is free with no holdings cap for Wealthsimple accounts. Looniee, Sharesight, Snowball Analytics and WealthWise have permanent free plans with caps. A spreadsheet is free with no limits at all.
- Which free tracker tracks TFSA contribution room?
- Greenline (during its beta) tracks TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RDSP room from a starting figure you confirm. Looniee's free plan works out TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RESP room from CRA rules. Wealthsimple's app says it doesn't track room. CRA My Account is free and official but updated once a year.
- What happens when I hit a free plan's limit?
- It varies. On Looniee nothing is deleted or hidden; you just can't add the next account, holding or transaction until you remove something or upgrade. Snowball moves you to its free plan after the trial, and you upgrade or remove holdings to get under the limit. Check each product's terms before you load years of data.
- Do free trackers connect to my bank?
- Mostly not on free plans. Snowball's broker linking and WealthWise's sync are paid features. Wealthsimple's app is automatic for its own accounts. Looniee and Greenline never connect, on any plan.
We checked prices and features for every product here on its own website (earliest check: October 20, 2026). This changes often, so double-check before you pay for anything.
