What Sharesight does better
Getting your trades in. Sharesight lists 14 Canadian brokers, including BMO InvestorLine, CIBC Investor's Edge, Desjardins, Interactive Brokers, National Bank Direct Brokerage, Qtrade, Questrade, RBC Direct Investing, Scotiabank, TD Direct Investing and Wealthsimple. Depending on the broker, trades arrive through a direct connection, forwarded trade-confirmation emails or a spreadsheet upload. Looniee has no connections at all; every new trade is an import or a line you type.
Tax reporting that has been around for years. Its Canadian capital gains report works out ACB under CRA rules and handles splits, DRIPs, return of capital and currency conversion. Looniee has ACB and capital gains too, but only on Plus, and the feature is newer.
Dividends and corporate actions arrive on their own. Sharesight says dividends, dividend reinvestments and share splits are updated automatically. In Looniee you import or enter them.
Apps, sharing and reach. Sharesight has iOS and Android apps, lets you share your portfolio and tax reports with your accountant, and covers markets far beyond Canada and the US. Looniee is web only.
What Looniee does better
Contribution room. Sharesight lets you set each portfolio's tax status (non-registered, RRSP, RRIF or TFSA) so dividends and withholding tax are treated correctly. Room tracking isn't documented on its TFSA and RRSP pages, and FHSA and RESP aren't mentioned. Looniee has a room engine for each of the four, working from the rules: TFSA withdrawals come back on January 1 of the next year, the RRSP's $2,000 over-contribution buffer, the FHSA's $8,000 carry-forward cap and RESP grant catch-up.
A household on one plan. Sharesight treats a portfolio as roughly one tax entity and recommends tracking each registered account separately. A couple with a TFSA and an RRSP each is four portfolios, which is its Standard plan. Looniee Plus covers up to 6 people, each with their own room, for one price.
A larger free plan for a buy-and-hold investor. Both free plans stop at 10 holdings, but Sharesight counts positions you've sold and leaves tax reports out. Looniee's free plan (3 accounts, 10 holdings, 500 transactions) counts current holdings, and room, imports and the Income tab all work on it.
No connection to manage. Nothing to re-authorise, and nobody holds a link to your brokerage account.
Withholding by country, not currency. Looniee's free Income tab estimates the foreign withholding each account loses from where the company is based and the account type, so a Canadian company listed in New York isn't docked 15%. Sharesight handles US withholding through each portfolio's tax setting; we didn't find documentation for other countries, so ask them if that matters to you.
Prices, in Canadian dollars
Sharesight's pricing page says "Prices in CAD. Taxes may apply." Its Starter plan is CA$12 a month, or CA$9 a month billed yearly, for 1 portfolio and 30 holdings. Standard (4 portfolios) is CA$31 a month or CA$23.25 a month billed yearly, and Premium (10 portfolios) is CA$39 a month or CA$29.25 a month billed yearly. Looniee Plus is CA$9/mo, or CA$72/yr (CA$6/mo), with no caps on accounts, holdings or people up to six.
For a single investor with one non-registered account, the prices are close and Sharesight's reports are the stronger reason to pay. The gap opens up for households: tracking each person's TFSA and RRSP as separate portfolios is what pushes Sharesight into its Standard or Premium plan.
Can you use both?
Some investors do: a performance tracker for returns and tax reports, and something else for room. If that's you, Looniee's free contribution room calculators answer the room question without an account. If you want room tracked all year as you contribute, that's what the TFSA tracker is for.
Moving from Sharesight to Looniee
Your broker holds your full history. Export transactions from each broker and import those files: see how to export from Wealthsimple and how to export from Questrade. TD, RBC and CIBC files are recognised automatically too, and any other broker's file is matched column by column. Then start your room from the figure in CRA My Account.
Questions
- Does Sharesight track TFSA contribution room?
- Not that we could find. Sharesight lets you mark a portfolio as a TFSA so Canadian payouts are treated as non-taxable, and its TFSA and RRSP articles (March 2026) describe tax settings rather than room. FHSA and RESP aren't mentioned. If room matters to you, ask Sharesight, and check CRA My Account for the official figure.
- Is Sharesight's free plan enough?
- For a small portfolio, maybe. It covers 1 portfolio and 10 holdings, and sold holdings count toward the 10. Tax reports start on the paid plans. Its free plan includes a demo portfolio so you can preview the paid reports.
- Does Looniee calculate capital gains like Sharesight?
- Looniee Plus calculates average-cost ACB pooled across your non-registered accounts, converts USD trades at each trade's own exchange rate, and flags superficial losses. Sharesight's capital gains report is the older, more established feature, and it's available on its Starter plan and up. Treat either as an estimate to check against your slips.
- Does Looniee connect to my broker?
- No. Looniee never asks for a broker or bank password. You import the CSV or Excel file your broker lets you download, upload a screenshot, or type holdings in. Prices update automatically; trades don't.
- Which is cheaper for a couple?
- Usually Looniee. Sharesight suggests one portfolio per registered account, so two people with a TFSA and an RRSP each need four portfolios, which is its Standard plan (CA$31 a month, or CA$23.25 a month billed yearly). Looniee Plus is CA$9/mo, or CA$72/yr (CA$6/mo) for up to 6 people.
Sharesight's prices and features were checked on its own website on October 20, 2026. Products change, so check anything that matters to you before you choose either one.
